FOR YOUR ATTENTION THIS WEEK
Please note that weekday morning prayer in St Michael's resumes on Wednesday 8 September

New This Week!   Next Sunday, 12th September, Stephen Dinsmore -  the National Director of SOMA UK - will be coming to speak at the 9am and 7pm congregations. St Michael's is developing their link with SOMA UK and Stephen will be coming to share about mission and SOMA's vision. SOMA is the overseas arm of the Church of England's Renewal Ministry. It works for the transformation of individuals and churches by sending and receiving teams worldwide on short-term mission."

New This Week!   We need your help.  The hospitality and events group are looking to build up a list of volunteers for the many St Mike's events that take place throughout the year.  The hope is that by having enough volunteers on the list we can spread the load.  Putting your name on the list does not mean you would be asked to volunteer at every event that takes place but it would mean we would be able to contact a group of people more easily when needs arise.  Would you be willing to spare the odd Saturday or evening?  Would you be willing to bake cakes on occasions to support these events?  If so then contact contact Olivia Seymour on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 01759 372671

Matthew Porter's Church Shape Talks.  You have a chance to catch up with, or listen again, to all 9 of Matthew's 'Church Shape' sermons on Worship, Discipleship and Outreach.  They are online at www.stmichaelsyork.org or you can buy them on CD.  Just drop into the Parish Centre or email: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it to get your copy for £2.50.  Limited copies are available in the Narthex today.

CHURCH SHAPE CONFERENCE  The conference which was planned for 6 November (and which Matthew refers to in the talks above) has been postponed until the Spring when it will be a major conference to launch our new vision for the church.  It will be a really important day for us all as a church and we will get the date to you as soon as possible.

NEW DAVID WATSON BOOK Jehova Rapha:  God Who Heals.  In this second book of the series, compiled from over 20 years of preaching, David Watson show us how healing is both a sign of God's power among us and of his kingdom here on earth.  He gives practical, biblical teaching on healing as well as personal testimony to a God wo heals, but not always in the ways we ask.  The book is avaialable from the church bookstall or on line here.

New This Week!
   MISSION  PROMOTION
The work that St Michael's supports at Dayspring Elementary School in Jinja, Uganda now has a fantastic website and you will be amazed when you read the story of how this work began with George and Stella Muzaale, and how this ministry is growing today.  Can we encourage you to check it out for yourself!  The website is:  www.dayspringeducentreug.org

Finance :  To see how St Michael's is doing financially at the moment please click here.

Used Cartridges  Thank you to everyone who put ink cartridges in the box in church.  We have already raised around £100 for St Michael's by having them recycled.  Do continue to keep the box at the back of the church full.

 SOCIAL ACTION

In these times of financial hardship...
How many times have you read that this month? Or this year? The Archbishop of York has launched a website for people to donate directly to the poorest in our region, entitled Acts 4:35: http://www.acts435.co.uk/. This is also an important time to be giving through Besom, in time, skills and household items. And a local group is being set up to campaign against the government's cuts and privatisation that are threatening to leave thousands unable to support themselves, called Right to Work. Please pray for and where possible, commit to, any or all of these initiatives; they are needed now more than ever.

Want to help people move off the streets?  York Arclight are setting up a range of activities to engage people who have recently been homeless and help them feel they have a worthwhile contribution to make. Activities range from music, crafts and baking sessions to a men's group, football team and fitness club. If you have some skills, or just interest, in any of these areas, or think you have something else to offer, please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Thank you for giving to the Peasholme Centre for the homeless.  Please keep your gifts of clothes and food coming into the bins provided at the back of church.

PRAYER
New This Week!   Please pray for Dave Roberts.  He is a former churchwarden of St Michael's, now living in Wigginton. He is expecting to go into hospital in early September for major surgery for a longstanding condition.

New This Week!   Do you have a heart for persecuted Christians?  If so, please come and pray for them for one hour on Sunday 12th September at 206 Beckfield Lane, Acomb from 3-4 pm.  Contact Pam Hagen if you'd like to come.

PAULINE AND MALCOLM MORRIS Please pray for Pauline and Malcolm who are unwell.  Malcolm is now recovering at home following pneumonia and a stroke three weeks ago.  Pauline has had two back operations in the last few months and still has pain.

RICHARD LAW'S SISTER  Please pray for Richard's sister, Brigid, who has had a hysterectomy this week.  Pray for a successful operation without complications and good recovery and for Richard and Betty as they seek to care for her at this time.

New This Week!
   Prayer4Work Lunch
Do you sometimes feel like you are the only Christian in your place of work? Would you like to meet to pray with other people about your work or colleagues? I work in the Clifton Moor area and a small group if us meet once a week to pray. We meet on Tuesdays 12.30 till 13.30. If you are interested or would like to help please contact Simon Foster This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 07906028412 (evenings and weekends only please)

Clare Hatton (an ex-homeless friend to many here) now has a new home in a community and would value your continued prayers for her as she makes her new life there and settles in.  If you would like to send her a note of support for her new journey, you could send it care of Holy Rood House, 10 Sowerby Road, Thirsk YO7 1HX.  She is very grateful for all the support both financially and in prayer and friendship from this church.  Thank you.

Please continue to pray for Christine Sharpe.  The consultant phoned to say her tests after the operation show the cancer has spread into the surrounding muscle.  She now has to wait and see a specialist to decide on the next treatment.  Please pray that God will be very near to her at this time.

Prayers are now available round the clock on the church website.  To find out more information click: 'What we do'; 'Prayer and ministry': 'Prayer room'.

Prayer Group  A group of us have been praying before the 7.00pm service in the balcony from 6.00 - 6.50pm. It is a really special time but it would be good if a few more people could join the rota. If you think that this might be you, please contact Frances Harding at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for more details. Many thanks.

Helen Pinhey (nee Rudge)  Please continue to pray for Helen who is about to start her second chemotherapy for breast cancer.  Pray that the treatment will go well and that she will cope with the side effects.

CHRISTMAS! Dont groan.... We are getting ready for Christmas and we need your help.  Again this year we are looking to put on a number of events that reach out to shoppers and tourists visiting the city.  We are holding an Alternative Christmas event on Saturday 20 November (more details to follow soon) as well as two Christmas Cafes, one to run during St Nicholas Fayre on 27 November and one on 11 December.  As always, these events are only successful because of the many volunteers who give up thier time to make them happen.  Could you give up 3 hours or half a day of your timeon any of these dates to help us?  Would you be willing to bake some cakes for the Christmas cafes?  If you can offer any help at all please do contact Olivia Seymour on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Emmaus Course. Visions and Transcendence are now running an Emmaus Course. The course takes a closer look at the Christian faith - a little different to the Alpha course, with even more room for discussions and potentially more in-depth on the areas it covers. We don't have "guests" in the same way as Alpha, as we're all on the same journey. The course will take place on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of the month from 7.00 pm. We will meet in the Black Swan Pub on Peasholme Green, followed by a short "Night Prayer" service in St Cuthbert's opposite. Please feel free to bring along friends, or just come by yourself.-
