BIBUSO 2 THE BIG VISION
......to present everyone perfect in Christ

Five years ago, the PCC met over a weekend at Ampleforth Abbey to develop the Bring in, Build up, Send out (BIBUSO) vision.  This has helped us to shape and direct our work over the past 5 years.  We have seen how much can be done in that amount of time.  In September 2005 the PCC gathered once again to look back, seek God and set new goals for the next 5 years of our church life.  This has been dubbed BIBUSO 2, the Big Vision and began its life on New Year's Day 2006.  It is a map of our aspirations, and we will continue to seek the Holy Spirit's direction as we plot our path through it.  But we know it will need commitment, prayer and sacrificial giving to see this next phase of our ministry become a reality.  Will you join us?

The Vision is a working document - some things have been achieved already and the vision for some has already changed radically - but it's a map of where we think we are heading.

BUILDING THE VISION

In order to realise this vision, we plan to undertake major work on both St Michael's and St Cuthbert's, to house the new and growing ministries.

St Michael's
We plan to perform long over-due repairs and renovations to the outer face of St Michael's, repairing the stonework and restoring its beauty, creating an eye-catching landmark in the centre of the city.  Within the church we will focus on two areas - the narthex and the chancel.  We will improve the narthex to be a welcoming, attractive and functional space, the first impression for most visitors.  We will develop the chancel to be easily and quickly transformed into a well-equipped performance-café venue for our ‘culture-track' - staging cultural and spiritual events throughout the week.

St Cuthbert's
We plan to restore the outer shell of the church and completely redevelop the interior.  The roof will be replaced, the bubble removed, and a fully-equipped, modern youth centre created.  The newly-developed building will house work with young people from around the city throughout the week, as well as functioning on a Sunday as a worship space for Visions and an outreach to the new Hungate development.  Our strong desire is to see new life breathed into this valuable asset and we are committed to seeing this happen within 5 years.

With both these developments we plan to have the majority of the work complete within three years, such that they can be fully-functioning, and any remaining work signed off within the 5-year vision.

FINANCING THE VISION
The financial implications of BIBUSO2 will be two-fold.  Firstly, the capital expenditure, in particular to develop the buildings, will be in excess of £2million.  This would be raised in two ways - through the giving of the church and through the work of a fundraiser.

Secondly there will be a significant change to our ongoing costs.  In order to see new staff and ministries inaugurated and sustained we would need to double the number of standing orders over the next 5 years, from 200 at present, to 400 by the end of 2010.

ONGOING LIFE
In addition to the specific goals, much of our current work as a growing Christ-centred community in the heart of York will continue.  We will seek significant numerical growth, with many more people involved in ministry.  We will employ staff and support new and existing mission partners.  We will run Alpha and other evangelistic ventures such a YSO and the Worship Café.  We will hold conferences for the wider church and place a strong emphasis on Biblical teaching in our services.  We will value and develop the use of spiritual gifts, and diversify our prayer-life, both in style and location.  We will run yearly houseparties and encourage fellowship across our congregations.  We will develop our cell life and establish clusters for social action and evangelism.  We will multiply our services and look for opportunities to plant congregations in new areas.  We will continue our work with youth, inside and outside of St Michaels, and place a high value on our senior members.  We will encourage the use of our church building throughout the week for members and visitors alike.  We will seek opportunities to send teams on short-term missions with a sustained focus on specific places.  We will provide lay-pastors with specialist skills and seek to care for the vulnerable.  We will encourage and equip our members to be involved in mission where they are, recognising our local area as our mission field.
