Meet Some Students... E-mail

Here are some stories of how a few of our students have found St Mike's

Iain.jpgIain Mackenzie, York Uni: "While I told myself that coming to York was nothing to really worry about deep down it was really a different situation. I had never had to deal with shopping, cooking, washing, cleaning, finding where to do the shopping, finding the quick routes into town and most of all meeting new people... and remembering their names! And while I believed that I would be superman and avoid getting ‘fresher's flu' in reality everyone will suffer! This is the key of coming to York; everyone is in the same position as you, everyone is unsure how to get to places, everyone is struggling to remember each other's names. Yet coming to York as a Christian is an easier matter, I quickly realised that for one night of the week I could be fed an AMAZING meal. I had been told by people back at home that I should check out St. Mikes as it was a really good place to be, and found it was. I could easily put down surviving the first term of university to the Hub, it gave me a delicious meal (with desert and seconds!) as well as a chance to meet a wider range of people. Yet St. Mikes is not just about food, it was a place full of great teaching, amazing worship and generally a place where I felt that I could call home for the next three years of my life."

Nakita.pngNakita Walker, St John's Uni:  "I have been coming to St Mike's since my first term at uni. Coming from Jersey I am not able to go home during term time and so it was important that I found a church where I felt at home. Whilst St Mike's is a large church everybody is really friendly and welcoming. There are so many students and it is reassuring to know that a lot of people are or have been in the same situation as you. Starting uni is a time when you become fully independent, you have a freedom that you haven't had before and are able to make decisions all by yourself! This can be fun but for me I freaked out! I hadn't ever been in a position where I could decide so many things for myself!!! What I was looking for in a church was somewhere I could get involved with serving in different roles. St Mike's has so many things going on that it is easy to get involved in something your interested in. The Hub (student meal before Sunday evening service) gives students an oppurtunity to get some cheap grub, socialise and meet people from both unis. St Mike's has been an integral part of helping me to settle in York both in the beginning when I was new to the city and now when I come back to uni from home each term. It is somewhere that I have grown in my faith and have experienced amazing fellowship. St Mike's is a multi-generational church that has helped me to really settle at university and to see York as a home away from home."

Elizabeth Haggie, York Uni: "When I came to York last year, I already knew a few people who went to St Mike's so decided to go along and see what it was like. I really enjoyed the services and found the meal at the hub beforehand a good way to get to know other students as well as offering relevant teaching to life at uni. I started going to G2 in the mornings after being invited by some friends in the CU. I found it different from any other church I'd been to, because of the 'cafe style' layout, which allows you to discuss what the speaker talks about. Everyone was really friendly and I felt like I was able to become a part of it and get involved".
